Gymnocalycium schatzlianum MG486.5     7/5/15
The most recent book on Gymnocalycium (by Graham Charles) gives this a different name: G. reductum leeanum. The very pale yellow flower is not white! Mr Charles does a fair amount of lumping in his book, which I can sympathize with. However, I can sort the 30 or so plants of ten or so species that I have into their proper groups by just looking at them, so maybe they are distinct species. The lumper/splitter thing is never-ending. The Mesa Garden catalog today lists six subspecies of G. gibbosum. Charles’s book lists two. It says G. brachipetalum, pictured above, is just G. gibbosum gibbosum. I could be convinced.   (08/40)
