Notocactus rutilans     5/27/15
Reliable flowers in June. Another of the many things that my two China trips have taught me about cacti is that the genus Notocactus is nowhere near as drought tolerant as the general run of cacti. The most death happened among my various Notrocactus while I was gone. This is probably because in their native habitat in southern Brazil and Northern Uruguay, etc., the plants get more than 6 feet ( 2 m) of rain. They do the cactus thing by living on rocky outcrops (excellent drainage) in tall grass meadows. The genus also does not like all day full sun. The grass in habitat shaded the plants. This all might be true for the genus Parodia. (Hunt lumps Notocactus into Parodia.)   (14/40)
