Notocactus erinacea    8/30/2014
The specific name means “hairy.” The “eri” stem in Greek refers to hair. The hairy pink thing is a fruit, inside of which are many seeds. It’s neat that flowers and ripe fruit are contemporary. The hairy patch at the apex is permanent. Flowers come out of the hair, followed by fruit, if pollination was successful.   (02/32)
